Wrestling with Demons:
In Search of the Real Ernest Hemingway

About the Author

Curtis L. DeBerg

DeBerg first became intrigued with Ernest Hemingway when he traveled to Key West in 2005 to visit a cousin who owned a vacation home near Geiger Key. Serious injuries sustained in a plane crash in 2016 inspired him to learn more about Ernest Hemingway and to find the opportunity to travel the world in Hemingway's footsteps. In 2020, he retired to devote his time to researching Hemingway's travels—an ambitious journey no one had ever before attempted on this epic scale. His first book about Hemingway, Traveling the World With Hemingway, was published in Spring 2021 by Wild River Press (Seattle). This coffee-table book has received outstanding reviews on Amazon.

As for social media, he is a member of the Hemingway Society, a group connecting scholars and historians who love and promote the works of Ernest Hemingway. It has six hundred members worldwide and is one of the largest single-author organizations in existence. He is also a group administrator of the active Facebook group “Ernest Hemingway,” which currently has over 95,000 members. He is also the founder of “Hemingway’s Footsteps,” another Facebook group of Hemingway aficionados who enjoy seeing the places that Hemingway lived and visited. When not traveling or writing about Ernest Hemingway, he shares time between his homes in Miami, Florida and Hendaye, France, where he enjoys spending time with close friends, tasting fine wine, savoring French baguettes, and sampling craft beer.

After thirty-six years as a university business professor—the last thirty at California State University, Chico—Curtis L. DeBerg retired in 2020. He received his bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Northern Iowa in 1979. In 1984, he earned a master’s degree in economics and the following year he completed his doctoral degree from Oklahoma State University.
